Pigmentation is the coloration or darkening of an area of the skin or nails. The Skin contains a particular type of cells called melanocytes that produces a pigment called melanin. Depending upon the amount of pigment produced, the skin undergoes pigmentation. If skin produces too much pigment, it gets darker, a condition known as hyperpigmentation. However, if too little of the pigment is formed by the cells, the condition is known as hypopigmentation.
Melanin is what gives our skin its color. The amount of melanin in your skin determines if you have a light or dark complexion. Pigmented lesions are dark in color simply because the melanin is abnormally concentrated in one area of the skin. High concentrations of melanin can be due to various factors. Some types are present atbirth, but most occur with age, or as a result of overexposure to the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays.
Vary in size and usually appear on the face, hands, shoulders and arms, areas most exposed to the sun. Age spots are very common in adults older than age 50.
Is a common skin condition of adults in which light to dark brown or greyish pigmentation develops mainly on the face.
Are flat, tanned circular spots that may develop on sun-exposed skin after repeated exposure to sunlight.
